Add Headphone monitoring to your Canon DSLR Camera - DSLR FILM NOOB Video

http://www.dslrfilmnoob.com/2011/02/25/more-on-adding-audio-monitoring-to-your-dslr/ Many of the direct recording audio solutions for Canon DSLR Cameras involve large boxes and other random Items in order to get the audio into your camera. But once the audio is being recorded by your camera how do you know if it is any good?

Well with the the help of a FiiO e5 headphone amplifier:

and a female RCA to 3.5mm adapter:

You can add audio monitoring functionality to your Canon DSLR Camera (when using a field monitor).

I have two people to credit in this video. The first one is Christian Sundsdal. He is the one I mentioned who hooked the rode VideoMic and FiiO e5 together. You can find out more about him here: http://vimeo.com/sundsdal

And the second is Youtube member Freyguyproductions. He sent in the question that got me started looking for this solution. You can find his blog here: http://Freyguyproductions.blogspot.com

NOTE: Remember this is for use with a field monitor. You need either an HDMI monitor or a little composite input monitor. See: http://www.dslrfilmnoob.com/2011/01/30/dirt-cheep-monitor-project/

The screen on the camera goes black as soon as you plug the usb-composite adapter into your camera. If you aren't using a field monitor this probably isn't the way to go.

Equipment Used in this video:
Canon t2i & 7d
Canon 35mm f1.4
Sigma 30mm f1.4
Fiio e5 headphone amp
Sennheiser G2 wireless mic
CPM FILM TOOLS Rig

@roeroe305 ML doesn't support Audio Monitoring for the T3i yet. I am pretty bummed out myself. I just bought a? t3i myself. Us T3i users will have to wait a bit longer to get audio monitoring that way.

Can't seem to find the answer to roeroe305's question about hooking up to T3i... @onelonedork Do you absolutely need a monitor in order to get sound into your headphones or can this be done without the need of a monitor ? Did the T3i "shutting down" problem get fixed ? Anyone ? Thx.?

@TheIndyfilmer I am very curious about this as well. I have? the Azden shotgun (XLR) going into the BechTek adapter, and I experience the dreaded Canon hiss.

I hope you see this question. Would you suggest the ART usb dual that you reviewed (that costs about $70) or this system? I have a canon rebel t3i, an azden sgm 2x shotgun, and currently just an xlr to 3.5mm adapter. I ask because I get more noise than I would like. The t3i already has agc (which I have been told to leave low) I know that both solutions give? you audio monitoring and both seem acceptable. For my situation, what do you suggest? Thanks.

Hey man how's? it going? I just wanted to say that I really like your channel very much. I have a question that maybe you can help me with. I have an old Canon 300D or Digital Rebel. Every time I'm taking photos it is very difficult for me to review them 'cause of the small screen. I was watching your videos and I'd like to know if there is any way that I can connect my camera to a monitor and view the photographs right after taking them? Thanks in advance I would really appreciate any advice!

I've bought the headphone amplifier for monitoring my sound on my 600D/T3i, but I don't get sound from the USB to 3 cinch cables connected to the headphone amplifier. When connected to my Zoom H1 the sound is working fine and when listening back the movies made? on the T3i with the headphoneamplifier connected to the 3cinch-usb cable I also have sound.. is there a setting in the T3i for audio monitoring in live view?
